The dinosaur bone we use in our inlay rings is usually referred to as “gembone”. After millions of years, it is actually no longer bone as we know it, but is a combination of minerals that have replaced the original bone with stone over time. The process is basically the same as what occurs to create petrified wood where the wood is slowly replaced by other minerals. Fossilized dinosaur bone is found in a rainbow of colors with the webbing color and cell size varying greatly from piece to piece. The varying cell size and colors create some truly unique patterns and virtually one of a kind dinosaur bone rings and jewelry. The fossilized dinosaur bones used in our rings can be composed of many different minerals including agate, jasper and calcite. The bone color and hardness is determined by the combination of minerals present when the fossilized bone was formed. Some bone colors are more rare than others with multicolor cells in a nice pattern being the most sought after for rings and other bone jewelry. The high quality dinosaur bone in our rings has a hardness of 6-7 on the Moh’s scale which makes the bone fairly hard and durable.
The agatized Utah dinosaur gem bone in our dinosaur bone rings and jewelry comes from the Morrison formation in the Colorado Plateau in Utah and was a living animal during the Jurassic Period around 144 to 208 million years ago. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine exactly what type of dinosaur the bone was once a part of because in most cases the dinosaur bone fragments collected and sold for jewelry are only a portion of the original bone. If the gem bone was a large intact specimen it would be much more valuable as a museum display than cut up and put in jewelry. Most of the dinosaur bone we use in our jewelry is purchased in fairly large pieces leading us to believe that these pieces were once part of a large leg bone from a large plant or meat eating dinosaur. Our dinosaur bone ring designs allow you to wear a unique piece of the Earth's history on your finger.
